Accountability is passe?

I know criticizing the President has become problematic. I guess that's just too bad for me. I have regained (some) hope for our political system through Senator Russ Feingold's proposed resolution to censure the President for his controversial-at-best actions in authorizing the NSA to wiretap phone calls to US citizens without warrants.

Do I like terrorists? No.

Do I just want to give them a hug, as my uncle accuses me? No.

Do I think that the law is supposed to apply to everyone equally? Yes!

The Congress passed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act in 1978. FISA is the legal statute that deals with this very issue. The President certainly appears to have violated the law in authorizing this surveillance that involves US citizens on US soil. Senator Feingold is asking the Senate to call the President on this. Censure is only a slap on the wrist, yet the Republicans won't deal with the issue and Democrats are running scared.

Progressive talk host Ed Schultz has been following this story all week. We need to encourage our senators to support this resolution. How can we advance as a culture, as a civilization, if we won't hold our elected leaders accountable for their actions? It's no wonder that many average citizens won't submit to accountability in the different areas of their lives. Clinton had the same problem, but Congress got wise and held his feet to the fire. President Bush is no less immoral for what he has done. He continues to run from this. Let's stem the tide of disillusionment in the country and help the President by showing him the boundaries of his power.
